from good ole Western Mass, now re-planted in Brooklyn, Rachael Balcanoff (she/they) is an Illustrator, Writer, Teacher, Puppeteer, and proud member of AEA. She is also a Songstress, and though her old pop-punk band played Warped Tour and CBGB’s way back in the day, she now does most singing to herself at the supermarket, and through a plexiglass barrier which separates her from her hopefully future-pet-chameleon, Jupiter.
Their plays LookatAllThisS P A C E, and a collaborative co-written piece Atomic City were both performed at ATL. Her play I D O N ‘ T K N O W W H A T I’ M D O I N G was a ESPA Drills Finalist.
Rachael has acted in various plays, including the Rolling World Premiere of Not Medea (CATF), The Christians (Playwright’s Horizons), Remix 38 (Actors Theatre of Louisville), A Christmas Carol with James Taylor (Berkshire Theatre Group), and What Happened at the Dolphin Show (Sam. French. Off-Off BWay Play Fest), which was a New Play Winner.
In the puppet-world, they Assistant-Directed Puppetry in Three Wise Guys presented by TACT (dir. Scott Evans), Designed puppets for A Tell Tale Heart at the Denizen Theatre (dir Andy Gaukel), and are a co-creator of the children’s show concept, friend.
Rachael has also given herself numerous awards in Illustration, including “Grossest Bug Picture” and “Prettiest Sunset.”
They’re a Teaching Artist with ArtsConnection in the New York City public school system.
She is available for private teaching and commissions.
